Why Does My Child Struggle With Transitions? Does your child get upset or have tantrums when it’s time to switch activities? Like going from playing to bedtime, or from school to home?

It might not be just stubbornness. Sometimes, it’s because of how they feel inside or how their brain handles changes.

Signs Your Child Has Trouble With Transitions

  • Tantrums or crying when stopping an activity
  • Taking a long time or getting distracted
  •  Feeling worried about new places or changes
  • Getting upset if plans change suddenly
  • Wanting to do only one thing and not switch

Why Transitions Are Hard for Some Kids

  • Feeling too much at once
  • Trouble planning or changing what to do next
  • Finding it hard to calm down or control feelings
  • Wanting things to be the same every time

Simple Tips to Help Your Child

  • Use visual timers or count down before a change
  • Tell your child what’s coming next, ahead of time
  • Let your child take a favorite toy with them when moving
  •  Keep routines the same and talk about any changes before they happen
  • Use calm, clear words and give choices: “Do you want to walk or hop to dinner?”
