Everyday ABA

How Parents Can Turn Daily Routines into Learning Opportunities

ABA Therapy

At Sprouts Speech Centre, we often remind parents that real progress doesn’t just happen during therapy  sessions — it happens at home, in the middle of everyday life.

It’s in the smiles during bath time, the chatter at the dinner table, and the small moments when your child ties their shoes or helps set the table. These moments, when used intentionally, can become powerful learning opportunities. That’s what we call “Everyday ABA.”

ABA, or Applied Behavior Analysis, isn’t only about reducing behaviors. It’s about teaching skills — communication, independence, focus, and social connection — in ways that feel natural to the child. And the best part? Parents can weave it beautifully into daily routines.

Morning Routines — Learning Independence

  • Mornings can be busy, but they're perfect for helping children build structure and independence.
  • First brush your teeth, then put on your clothes.
  • Visual charts with pictures of each step work wonderfully too.
  • And when your child completes even one small step, celebrate it “You did that all by yourself! I’m proud of you.”
  • Little by little, these small successes add up to confidence and self-reliance.

Mealtime — Growing Communication and Connection

  • Mealtimes are full of opportunities to strengthen communication and social interaction.
  • Encourage your child to request what they want: “I want juice,” or “More rice, please.”
  • Model polite phrases like “thank you” and “you’re welcome.”
  • You can even turn it into a game — describe food colors, textures, or tastes.
  • Every meal becomes a time to connect, talk, and learn together.

Playtime — Learning Through Fun

  • Play is where children’s worlds open up. Through play, they learn problemsolving, cooperation, and creativity.
  • Join your child in pretend play — be their student, their patient, or their cooking partner!
  • Simple activities like puzzles, block-building, or color sorting also help build attention and thinking skills.
  • When children play, they aren’t just having fun — they’re building the foundation for language, imagination, and social understanding.
  • Little by little, these small successes add up to confidence and self-reliance.

Bath Time — Sensory and Self-Help Skills

  • The bathtub is a fantastic space for teaching new words and concepts. Talk constantly about the actions you're performing and the sensations your child is experiencing: “Let’s wash your hands,” or “Feel how soft this towel is!
  • You can also teach counting — “Let’s pour water three times!”
  • t's a calm, sensory-rich time that offers a unique opportunity to foster several key areas of development, including body awareness, active listening, and the ability to effectively follow directions.
  • Learning feels effortless when it’s part of something enjoyable.

Bedtime — Building Calm and Routine

  • Even bedtime can support emotional growth.
  • Keep the same pattern each night — bath, pajamas, story, lights out.
  • Children thrive when they know what comes next.
  • Reading a short story or talking about the best part of the day builds bonding and language.
  • Praise them for calm behavior: “You’re lying down so nicely — that helps your body rest.”
  • Over time, bedtime becomes a peaceful transition that teaches predictability and comfort.

Why Everyday ABA Matters?

When parents use ABA strategies naturally at home, it helps children generalize what they learn in therapy. It means skills stick — because they’re practiced in real life.

At Sprouts Speech Centre, we work closely with parents to show how simple daily moments can turn into meaningful learning experiences. With the right guidance, every day becomes an opportunity to help your child grow, connect, and thrive.
